ITA Airways Takes Delivery Of Its 1st Blue Airbus A220

This is the fifth A220 variant in the ITA Airways fleet.

The flag carrier of Italy, ITA Airways, recently took delivery of its first Airbus A220 in its newly released all-blue livery. The aircraft entered the ITA Airways fleet on August 28. A delivery ceremony took place in Mirabel, Canada, where Airbus has the A220 program headquartered before the aircraft began its ferry flight to Rome Fiumicino. The aircraft will complete all of its preparatory tests before entering service.

The new A220 has a cabin complete with 149 seats. These seats are split between both business and economy-level seating options. Each seat is also made of Safran leather that has beige and blue coloring to match the airline's colors. USB power sockets are added to each of these seats as well.

Specifically, the interior of the new A220 was designed by Walter De Silva. De Silva says that he was inspired by the idea of bringing a pleasant and consistent journey above the clouds to the interior cabin. He also said the core concepts of the aircraft's interior design are comfort, elegance, and simplicity. He spoke further about choosing blue and beige colors as the predominant colors, which are natural colors made of natural materials. Additionally, the headrests have an Italian flag and embroidered logo on the front.

Other cabin upgrades include upgraded WiFi connectivity. The service allows passengers to purchase different packages based on their needs. The new A220 also has wider seats, a customized lighting system, larger windows, and increased overhead storage space.

The new aircraft received by ITA Airways is an A220-300 variant. The new aircraft features upgrades that lead to a lighter and quieter cabin. Additionally, the new variant delivers a 25% reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. This is compared to the previous variants of the Airbus A220. These upgrades fall in line with the ITA Airways Sustainability Plan.

The airline has a goal of its fleet compromised of 90% new-generation aircraft by 2027. The Chief Technology Officer and Accountable Manager of ITA Airways, Francesco Presicce, spoke about the new aircraft. He stated,

"The A220 will allow the Company to enhance its domestic and international network and represents a further step in our strategy of building a new fuel efficient and more sustainable fleet with leading-edge technologies which will optimize efficiency, quality of service and significantly reduce the airline carbon footprint,

"With the arrival of the Airbus A321neo by the end of this year, the ITA Airways fleet will include all the latest generation Airbus aircraft families. I would like to thank all the team involved in the project for their commitment towards this prestigious, coveted, and challenging achievement."

The A220-300 aircraft has a range of about 3,450 NM, which is an ideal size for domestic and European travel markets. ITA Airways plans to utilize this aircraft in its domestic and international network. Specifically, the airline will look to use the aircraft from Rome Fiumicino (FC) and Milano Linate (LIN) to Genoa (GOA), Turin (TRN), Naples (NAP), Geneva (GVA), Zurich (ZRH), and Munich (MUC).
