LANXESS PAINTS & COATINGS

INORGANIC PIGMENTS

For decades, Bayferrox® and Colortherm® pigments have been the benchmark for high-quality iron and chromium oxides in the coatings industry. Our customers can rely on proven quality consistency in the long term within very narrow tolerances, combined with superior dispersion properties. The Bayferrox® value approach combines dedicated product solutions with outstanding technical advice – see for yourself.

Colorants, plasticizers, coalescents & flame retardants

In its wide range of high-quality colorants, the Colorant Additives business – which is part of the Polymer Additives business unit – offers aqueous pigment dispersions under the brand names Levanyl® (organic) and Levanox® (inorganic).

The products combine high tinting strength, low viscosity and are binder-free. The pigment dispersions are suitable for use in decorative paints and as colorants for inks, paper, synthetic leather, wood preservatives, and many more applications.

In addition to colorants, the portfolio of Polymer Additives includes a wide variety of other additives for the coating industry.

The plasticizer Mesamoll® is especially suitable for flexible sealants and adhesives that are expected to exhibit a high degree of stability, particularly in contact with concrete and moisture.

As a coalescent, K-FLEX® – a non-phthalate plasticizer with low VOC content – optimizes essential properties of varnishes such as scratch resistance, luster, and dirt pick-up.

Products from the Disflamoll® brand offer effective flame retardance. The phosphorous-based additives are colorless and are used both in solvent-based and aqueous dispersions. They do not affect the color of the end product and are also suitable for use in transparent applications. Disflamoll® products are used in CAS (coatings, adhesives, sealants) applications in order to satisfy fire protection requirements.

Our technologies control and solve microbial contamination problems of materials in the wet state, thus lengthening product shelf life, and protecting dry film from algae, mold and mildew.

• We produce Benzyl Alcohol at four sites around the world, with a presence on every continent. It brings performance and value to a wide range of applications. For example, it is widely used as a non-reactive diluent in epoxy resin coatings where it reduces viscosity and raises product flexibility. In coatings and lacquers, our Benzyl Alcohol is valued as a solvent or co-solvent due to its low volatility and low toxicity. In paint stripper formulations, it especially acts as an environmentally friendly substitute for methylene chloride, also called dichloromethane/DCM or dimethyl chloride.

• Our PUROX® B Benzoic Acid is a key raw material in the production of alkyd resins, where it controls viscosity and enhances gloss, adhesion, hardness, and chemical resistance. It also effectively inhibits corrosion and flash rust at low concentrations.

• Benzaldehyde is an industrially useful aromatic aldehyde. It is used extensively as a non-reactive diluent in epoxy resin coatings where it reduces the viscosity and raises product flexibility.

F&F offers a uniquely high level of vertical integration and extensive chemical and technical expertise. The business unit operates production facilities in five locations on three continents, including Germany (Krefeld-Uerdingen), the Netherlands (Botlek), USA (Kalama), India (Nagda) and England (Widnes). Through the use of green electricity and biomass, the ISCC+ certified sites will produce mass balance certified renewable alternatives for the entire product portfolio by the end of 2023, reflecting the business unit's strong commitment to sustainability. Therefore, F&F can provide high availability, fast international deliveries and offer a resilient supply chain that can cope with emerging geopolitical uncertainties.

The business unit has around 750 employees and is part of LANXESS's Consumer Protection segment which generated sales of about 2.4 billion euros in 2022.

LANXESS’s range of Low Free (LF) isocyanate Trixene® and Adiprene® LF prepolymers and components meet the challenges of demanding industrial, wind energy and aerospace environments. The LF technology with <0.1% wt. free isocyanate for low hazard classification, high solids, low odor, and low VOC offers versatility for the formulator and end user, enabling 1K and 2K liquid-applied polyurethane (PU), polyurethane methacrylate (PUMA) and silyl polyurethane (SPUR) protective and liquid waterproofing coatings.

Here we answer the most frequently asked questions about our product solutions and its possibilities of use.

LANXESS offers a range of specific products and solutions to its customers in the area of paints and coatings:

1. Inorganic Pigments: LANXESS provides a variety of inorganic pigments, such as iron oxides, chrome oxide pigments, and specialty inorganic pigments. These pigments offer excellent color stability, durability, and chemical resistance to coatings.

2. Colorants: LANXESS offers customers all over the world a wide range of high-quality colorants. The aqueous dispersions of organic pigments (Levanyl®), and inorganic pigments (Levanox®) use a dispersing model which provides universal technical compatibility for a broad range of applications.

3. Performance Additives: LANXESS supplies various performance additives for paint and coatings formulations. These additives enhance the properties and performance of coatings, such as dispersibility, rheology control, wetting and leveling, foam control, and anti-settling.

4. Microbial Control Products: Aqueous raw materials used in the formulation of paints andcoatings create the perfect environment for the growth of bacteria, fungi andyeast which can destroy these valuable formulations. Our technologies controland solve microbial contamination problems of materials in the wet state, thuslengthening product shelf life. Moreover, we offer solutions to protectdry-film from algae and mold growth.

5. Binders and Resins: LANXESS produces binders and resins that act as the film-forming components in coatings. These binders provide adhesion, chemical resistance, and durability to the coating film. LANXESS offers a range of binders, including acrylics, polyurethanes, alkyds, and epoxy resins.

6. Crosslinkers and Curing Agents: LANXESS provides crosslinkers and curing agents that enable the curing and crosslinking of coatings, leading to improved hardness, chemical resistance, and film integrity. These products are used in various coating applications, such as automotive, industrial, and protective coatings.

7. Coating Additives: LANXESS offers a broad portfolio of coating additives, including wetting agents, defoamers, rheology modifiers, and surface modifiers. These additives help optimize coating performance and application properties, such as leveling, flow, and substrate wetting.
